A free hazardous waste collection is slated for Saturday, Aug. 17, from 9 to 11 am on the north side of the courthouse square. The event is for Jefferson residents only.
Items that will be accepted include aerosol cleaners and paints; ammonia-based cleaners; antifreeze; batteries (only rechargeable); fertilizers; fluorescent light bulbs (cfls); gasoline and kerosene; oil, lead-based paint; stains, varnishes; metal polishes, rust removers; thermometers and thermostats (mercury); pesticides; petroleum adhesives; and used oil filters.
Sharps or needles will also be accepted. They must be contained in detergent bottles or sharps containers (not milk jugs or soda pop bottles). Lids must also be taped.
Items that will not be accepted include ammunition; asbestos; electronics; explosives; fire extinguishers; latex paint; medications; propane tanks, cylinders; and radioactive materials.
Waste from schools and businesses, including farms, will not be accepted without prior approval.
